11th Amazing Earthfest Celebrates National Trails Day

Each year in early June, the American Hiking Society (AHS) www.americanhiking.org, connects people across the nation with the great outdoors through its National Trails Day activities. AHS represents millions of hikers who are committed to beautiful places to hike and believe that the preservation of hiking trails and their environments is important and a worthwhile legacy to leave future generations.  Kanab, Utah’s Amazing Earthfest, now in its 11th year, enthusiastically agrees!

Outdoor adventure is a feature of the annual Amazing Earthfest which takes place May 14-20, in the red rock splendor of southern Utah and northern Arizona. A total of four hikes, three bike rides and a trail cleanup event titled “Six Miles of Splendor”, are planned for the 2017 Earthfest and each one is listed on the AHS national database as a National Trails Day event. Founded in 1976, American Hiking Society is the only national organization that promotes and protects foot trails, their surrounding natural areas, and the hiking experience.  American Hiking Society recognizes that foot trails and hiking are essential to connect people with nature, conserve open space, provide biological corridors for diverse plants and wildlife and help Americans of all ages improve and maintain their health and our natural environment as well.  Muscle powered sports like hiking, cycling, paddling, horseback riding, trail running, building, maintenance and dedication are all included among the thousands of listed activities scheduled across the U.S. for 2017 National Trails Day.  While National Trails Day (NTD) itself will be celebrated on June 3rd, events taking place within a few weeks of that date can qualify for listing.

11th Amazing Earthfest NTD events includes a hike to beautiful Lick Wash on the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and another to a dinosaur track site with a paleontologist, both sponsored by Grand Staircase Escalante Partners; another one to a Native American rock art site with an archaeologist on the BLM Kanab Field Office District, and a third exploring Armijo’s Old Spanish Trail alternatives in the Box of Paria Canyon on GSENM. Mount your road bike for a 35-mile ride into GSENM, or hop on your mountain bike for two trail rides; one in Arizona and the other in Utah, including two new routes recently constructed in Kanab!

These are just a few of the diverse range of exciting experiences that southern Utah’s Amazing Earthfest offers.  Visit www.AmazingEarthfest.org for complete information and celebrate National Trails Day!
