INVOCATION TO SUSTAINABILITY
Date: Sunday, May 15, 2011
Time: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Location: Angel’s Landing Outdoor Amphitheater at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab. Directions: West side of the gravel road north of Best Friends Welcome Center.
Description: Enter an ancient gathering site to begin a moving experience blending Western folk lore, soul stirring music, poetry, science, prayer and meditation in a live outdoor performance exploring our connection to place. Accompanied by the extraordinary sound of Native American composer and performer Arvel Bird, www.arvelbird.com, experience meditation and evocative music coupled with perspectives of inquiry, discovery, and alignment with the natural world.
The program will feature Teresa Abrams, sundancer and firekeeper in the Lakota tradition, and Paiute sundancer Arvel Bird, in an authentic Native American pipe ceremony to celebrate the beauty of red rock country. This ceremony frames the modern concept of sustainability, recognizing the value of intact ecosystems and building community, within the ancient Native American concept of living in harmony with the Earth and respecting all life. “mitakuye oyasin”(we are all related), inspires us to be mindful of our actions on the next seven generations.
To begin the event, University of Utah’s Joe Andrade, Professor of Engineering, will address the gathering with his remarks titled, “Time: Perspectives, Patience and Action”. For the Invocation, ordained minister, Lenny Domyan will contribute insights to our understanding of creation as, “staying connected with the Source”. In this gathering, Kanab’s Amazing Earthfest continues to forge bonds between Salt Lake Valley and Kane County residents.
Welcome living inspiration in the beauty of the natural world as Arvel Bird elevates spirit to new heights with the sound of his Native American flute and violin. At this kick-off event tucked in a red rock alcove, celebrate shared connections as we explore Earth-care and sustainability in this science meets spirituality meets art event on a grassy meadow at the Best Friend’s Sanctuary. Please bring blankets and/or low chairs for seating. There’s nothing else like this on the planet!
