Cycling, Horseback & ATV Riding Events Saturday May 15th, 2010 Grand Staircase – Escalante National MonumentHeadquarters: 190 East Center Street, Kanab, Utah 435-644-4300 www.gsenm.org Contact: Larry Crutchfield 644-4310 ATV RIDE ON THE GREAT WESTERN TRAIL Date: Saturday, May 15, 2010 Time: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Location: Meet at the trailhead off US Hwy. 89, approximately 21.5 miles east of Kanab at the 5690 foot summit between mile markers 44 and 43.
Description: Join Bureau of Land Management Public Affairs Officer Larry Crutchfield on a day-long ATV ride along the Great Western Trail as it meanders through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Riders will stop at several locations along the way to discuss the science behind the Monument and some of the secrets it has revealed. Please bring ample water, food and fuel for the day's outing. In the event of inclement weather, the ride will be rescheduled for a later date. This activity is being held in conjunction with the 4th Annual Amazing Earthfest and the 10th Anniversary of the Bureau of Land Management's National Landscape Conservation System.

Description: 35 miles out and back through Johnson Canyon into Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (all paved)After pre-ride refreshments at the Bike Shop with Darren and Lisa, riders will drive 10 miles East of Kanab on US 89 to Johnson Canyon, where the ride will begin. Johnson Canyon Road, piercing the Vermilion and the White Cliffs of the Grand Staircase, offers matchless scenery, very low traffic, and a gentle grade. Pack your own water. Additional support will be available along the route.

Joy Jordan Woodhill Trail Ride (BLM) Date: Saturday, May 22, 2010 Time: 3:00 PM, Arizona Time Location: Meet and park vehicles at the Fredonia Welcome Center on US 89-A, at the northern edge of Fredonia, AZ. Bathroom facilities are available. Bring your own water and snacks. Description: Highly scenic, 12 mile non-technical loop on hard-packed natural surface with easy to moderate climbing, returning on pavement through town. Tracking beneath the Chocolate Cliffs, riders enjoy expansive views of the Antelope Valley and the North Kaibab Plateau, while breathtaking afternoon light animates the colorful cliffs of the Grand Staircase. HORSEBACK RIDE on theCOTTONWOOD CANYON TRAIL
Date: Saturday, May 22, 2010. Time: 10:00 AM Location: Meet at Cottonwood Canyon Trailhead, on the west end of Stansfield Drive, in the Kanab Creek Ranchos Subdivision. Take Kanab Creek Drive west, turn right on Stansfield, and continue west up the hill toward the water tank. Trailhead parking is located just below the tank. Be ready to depart at 10:00 a.m.
Description: This ride is moderate to difficult, with a lot of steep up and down. The trail surface varies from rocky to dirt/clay. The route is not well marked, so riders will need to stay together as a group. This equestrian event will take about 4 hours. Riders can expect hot, sunny weather, but should be prepared for variable weather conditions. You are required to sign a Waiver of Liability form. Participants must provide their own horses or mules, tack, transportation to the trailhead, hats, gloves, sun protection, sufficient water, and lunch or snacks. Non-members of the High Desert Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen must sign a liability waiver. There is no fee for the ride.
