INVOCATION TO SUSTAINABILITY

Date: Sunday, May 16, 2010

Time: 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM

Location: Angel’s Landing Outdoor Amphitheater at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab.  Directions: West side of the gravel road north of Best Friends Welcome Center.

Description: A north/south collaboration to forge bonds between Salt Lake Valley and Kane County citizens.  Join international choreographer dancer Maida Rust Withers, http://www.maidadance.com/performances.html, Utah poet and wordshaker Alex Caldiero, http://thesonosopher.blogspot.com/, and guest performers from Salt Lake’s Repertory Dance Theater http://www.rdtutah.org/about.html, in a live outdoor music/dance/science performance exploring our connection to place.  Experience meditation, evocative music and artistic movement coupled with perspectives of inquiry, discovery, and alignment with the natural world.

David Bowles, Pastor of the United Church of Kanab, will contribute insights to our understanding of creation as “life in relationship”.  Listen, then discuss with visiting University of Utah professors Kent Udell, Director of Sustainability Research Center, Joe Andrade, Professor of Engineering, and John Horel, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, ways to protect the Colorado Plateau’s air, water and great night skies.

Local Best Friends celebrity, Ann Allums will serenade us for this occasion with the soulful sound of her flute.  At this kick-off event tucked in a red rock alcove, celebrate shared connections as we explore Earth-care and sustainability on a grassy meadow at the Best Friend’s Sanctuary.  Please bring blankets and/or low chairs for seating.

The Healthy Planet Mobilization Committee’s commitment to peace, social justice and the environment in Northern Utah dovetailed with plans by Amazing Earthfest director Rich Csenge and Kanab-born dancer Maida Withers to explore sustainability, creating this science meets spirituality meets art event. There’s nothing else like it on the planet!

DARK SKIES: BENEFITS TO OUR COMMUNITY, OUR ECONOMY AND OUR HEALTH

Date: Friday, May 21, 2010

Time: Beginning at 7:00 PM

Location:  GSENM Kanab Visitor Center, 745 East US. Hwy. 89, Kanab.

This program includes two parts: an indoor multimedia presentation, followed by

fire-side stories and telescope viewing of Kanab’s legendary dark skies.

Description:  Join Bryce Canyon’s Kevin “The Dark Ranger” Poe, for journeys down two different paths: one where the stars fade away, and the other where their beauty blazes forever, promoting tourism, sustaining wildlife, and improving our human health.

Astronomy is a passion for Kevin, inspired by the unparalleled night sky splendor of Bryce Canyon National Park.  He is one of the founding members of the Earth To Sky NASA/NPS partnership designed to heighten public awareness about issues such as night sky preservation, and has appeared on The Travel Channel, PBS and regional outdoor shows, as well as local and national NPR interviews.

After Kevin’s presentation and discussion, the fun and learning continue at the home of astronomer, Mike Satter, 8 miles east of Kanab, where everyone is invited to enjoy traditional Pioneer and Native American star stories beside a glowing campfire, followed by telescope viewing of the night skies.  Refreshments will be available.  Travel to Mike’s house directly from the Kanab Visitor Center in convoy.
