CENTENNIAL TALKS AND DEMONSTRATIONS
Date: Monday, May 17 through Saturday, May 22 as listed. Time: As listed: Arizona time (one hour behind Utah time) Location: For all events, meet at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center, Page, Arizona. Rainbow Bridge event will be at Rainbow Bridge National Monument Description: Monday, May 17 - 9:30 AM to12:30 PM. Dinosaur Footprints: Tracks and Traces. GSENM Ranger and local paleontology expert, Merle Graffam will lead a field trip to a 180 million year old dinosaur track site. Requires your own 4-WD to get to the site and a 1/3 mile hike to see the tracks. Limited to 25 participants. Call 928-608-6404 to register. Bring water, good shoes, sun protection, snacks, camera, binoculars and layered clothing. Tuesday, May 18 - 9:30 AM to 11 AM. Eleven Sure-Fire Landscape Photography Tips. Photographer, Frank Talbot will present a workshop exploring the use of digital photography for the beginner. Explanation of camera controls for various digital cameras and tips for making better travel and landscape photographs will help anyone tell a better story through the lens of a camera. Wednesday, May 19 - 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Tips for Beginning Watercolorists. Artist, Jerry Lindsay will help beginners learn basic techniques of watercolor paints and paper, blending and use of colors. Participants will complete a painting. Outdoor presentation limited to 25 persons. Call 928-608-6404 to register. Paints, brushes, pencils and paper will be supplied. Bring your own folding chair, notepad, water, snacks, sun protection and layered clothing. Friday, May 21 - 7 PM. The Long Walk of the Navajo People, 1864-1868 Speaker: Evangeline Yazzie. To acknowledge the Navajo perspective, Ms. Yazzie recounts stories told by Navajo elders of the Long Walk: a powerful presentation of Navajo elders versions of the 450 mile forced walk to imprisonment at Fort Sumner. After being held for 4 years, and suffering from loneliness, illness and severe weather conditions, they were finally released and allowed to go back home. Program made possible by the Arizona Humanities Council. Saturday, May 22 - 10 AM to 12 PM. Rainbow Bridge. Evangeline Yazzie will be at Rainbow Bridge to speak casually with visitors and answer questions about the Navajo connection to Rainbow Bridge. Program made possible by the Arizona Humanities Council

(200 ft. climb) Sunday, May 16, 9:00 AM Amazing Desert Plants Join a ranger for a walk at Pipe Spring National Monument to learn about desert plants and the many ways we use them. Crafts of the Kai’va’veets The culture of the Kaibab Indians centered around their connection to the Earth. Learn more about this connection and its importance to the Kaibab Paiute people. Tuesday, May 18, 10 AM 10,000 Years of Natural Resource Management Join a ranger for a discussion of the various ways that humans have learned to work with the land to produce the food, shelter, tools, medicine and clothing that we need to survive. Wednesday, May 19, 10:00 AM Earth, Water and Fire - the Creation of Pottery Join us for a talk on how to make pottery from dirt and water, and a discussion of ancient open firing techniques. Thursday, May 20, 10:00 AM & 2:00 PM Reconstructing an Historic Landscape Come visit a re-vegetation plot at Pipe Spring National Monument where many grasses and forbs that were once common on the Arizona Strip are being grown. Friday, May 21, 9:00 AM Ethnobotany of Desert Plants Learn about the human uses (ethnobotany) of many plants growing on the Arizona Strip.
