Local Art Featured in Southern Utah’s Earthfest

Working artists can be hard to find in rural communities. Distance from the marketplace, lack of diversity and culture, and a focus on day-to-day needs can inhibit the will to fashion a life of artistic creativity.

But Utah offers notable exceptions. Artistic hotspots outside of larger cities in Utah tend to take shape in settings, where the beauty of nature is apparent, abundant and protected. Springdale is one example, and Kanab is becoming another. That’s because artistic creativity demands that makers feel a continual flow of inspiration to fuel imagination and stimulate the vital energy required to bring forth objects of exceptional worth. Such locales spontaneously attract not only creative and artistic sentiment, but also the volume of visitors and density of creative commerce needed to make art a viable pursuit. These communities typically foster a strong component of locally owned shops and businesses in their mix of development, and an openness to change as the rural West evolves.

The 13th annual Amazing Earthfest 2019 in Kanab, Utah, brings attention to this trend with an event titled, Downtown Gallery Stroll, scheduled on Monday, May 13, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Art lovers and foodies take note; twelve locally owned galleries and eleven locally owned restaurants are participating in the walk!

Discover Kanab’s burgeoning art community by visiting its in-town galleries and studios! Stroll through the central business district exploring a broad range of artistic styles and media. Dine along the walk at one of Kanab’s fine, locally owned downtown restaurants including Escobar’s, Nedra’s Too, Vermillion 45 French Country Table, Wild Thyme, Iron Horse, Houston’s, Fusion House, Parry Lodge, Rocking V Café, Peek-A-Boo Wood Fired Kitchen and Sego.

Participating galleries throughout in-town Kanab include Raven’s Heart Gallery, Adobe Studio and Gallery/Joy In Wood Furniture Makers, what is art, Walt Thirion Gallery, Raven House-Fine Art by Rebecca Gaver, Wild Thyme Café, Laughing Dog Pottery, Legend Design Studio. Silkfelt Kanab, Peek-A-Boo Canyon Wood-Fired Kitchen and Kanab City Library. For location information, pick up a special Downtown Gallery Stroll map at the Kane County Visitor Center, Rocking V Cafe, or Raven’s Heart.

Launch your gallery stroll anytime between 4:30 and 6:00 pm with complimentary catered gourmet hors d’oeuvres and beverages by Chef Lisa at The Rafters Gallery Upstairs @ The Rocking V Café (wine and beer available at regular prices). Catch live music by Rex Seabury, a.k.a. Utah Slim from 6 to 8 pm with dinner at Peek-A-Boo, or groove with Paul Boruff from 5 to 7 pm at Silkfelt, or with dinner at Sego from 8 to 10 pm, two fine musicians from Salt Lake performing at multiple venues during the festival. What a fantastic selection of food and fun!
